Engineering a Stronger Future in Atlantic Canada: TriMac Engineering

From energy-efficient building systems to complex industrial upgrades, TriMac Engineering continues to make an impact across Atlantic Canada through innovative engineering solutions rooted in sustainability, technical excellence, and community values. Founded in 2015 by brothers Joel and Andrew MacNeil alongside their father Blair MacNeil, TriMac has grown from a family-led vision into a trusted engineering partner serving clients across the industrial, commercial, and institutional sectors.

With offices in Sydney and Halifax, NS, TriMac Engineering has built a reputation for delivering thoughtful, forward-looking solutions while maintaining strong client relationships every step of the way. Their mission is simple yet impactful: empower clients to tackle ambitious projects through technical excellence and lasting partnerships.

TriMac’s work spans a wide range of disciplines, including mechanical, electrical, structural, controls, and energy engineering, along with project management and sustainability consulting. Their team approaches every project with one guiding question: How can we do it better? That mindset has helped position TriMac as a leader in sustainable engineering and energy-efficient design throughout the region.

Over the years, TriMac Engineering has contributed to a wide range of notable projects across Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada. In Cape Breton, the firm has played a key role in projects such as the design of the new Sydney Fire Station No. 1, the 45Drives headquarters building, cooling system upgrades at the Port Hawkesbury Justice Centre, HVAC systems for the David Muise Fieldhouse, energy studies at Cape Breton University, and a new 100 kW ground-mounted solar installation at Harbourside Park. Additional community and commercial projects include the new Breton Brewing Crafthouse on the Esplanade in Sydney and the residence development at the Gaelic College campus.

TriMac’s expertise has also contributed to major infrastructure, institutional, and energy projects for organizations including Nova Scotia Public Works, Cape Breton Regional Municipality, Build Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia Power, Halifax Harbour Bridges, Nova Scotia Provincial Housing Agency, Halifax Water, Nova Scotia Health, and IWK Health Centre, supporting healthcare facilities, government and public buildings, educational institutions, museums, office developments, and retail facilities throughout the region.

Sustainability remains at the core of TriMac’s approach. Through sustainable and energy efficient design, energy modeling and analysis, HVAC electrification upgrades, renewable energy integration, and lifecycle cost analysis, the company is helping organizations reduce energy consumption, improve operational efficiency, and prepare for the future. Their projects consistently reflect a commitment to balancing innovation with environmental responsibility.

Beyond engineering, TriMac Engineering places a strong emphasis on community involvement, workplace culture, and continuous improvement. The company supports local initiatives and believes in creating an inclusive, respectful, and growth-oriented environment for both employees and clients alike. TriMac believes in investing in their team by supporting employee growth through continuing education opportunities while fostering a healthy work-life balance.

TriMac Engineering demonstrates a strong commitment to corporate citizenship through ongoing charitable involvement and community support. Beyond their charitable work, TriMac also invests in future talent through the TriMac Award, a $1,000 annual bursary for engineering students entering their second year at Cape Breton University. TriMac’s commitment to both their industry and community has been recognized through multiple honours, including the Economic Development Leadership Award at the 2024 Excellence in Business Awards and the Employer Excellence Award at the Vital Unama’ki- Cape Breton Excellence Awards in 2025.
