Forging Forward Counselling Services | Breaking Down Barriers to Mental Health Care

Access to mental health support can be challenging, long waitlists and high costs often stand between people and the help they need. Forging Forward Counselling Services (FFCS) was created to change that. With the main office based in Ontario and a second location in Sydney, Nova Scotia, FFCS provides individuals, couples, and families with timely access to counselling through a range of options designed to meet diverse needs and budgets.

Since its launch, FFCS has become known for connecting clients with both registered counsellors and practicum students from Master’s programs, ensuring that help is available within days, not months. In Nova Scotia, FFCS is home to a unique counselling program, it offers several cost-free sessions with practicum counsellors or 5 cost-free sessions with registered counsellors. This approach has allowed members of the community to begin therapy quickly, build coping skills, and experience positive change without the financial burden that can prevent people from getting started.

Collaborations with local non-profits have been key to FFCS Nova Scotia’s success, helping to reach youth, individuals living with mental health challenges, and those navigating addictions. Community collaborators have shared that the program is making a visible difference: participants report feeling lighter, more hopeful, and better equipped to face challenges after their sessions.

FFCS continues to grow its impact by removing barriers to care, including offering direct billing through TELUS Health for registered counsellors. Its mission remains simple, to make counselling accessible, affordable, and available when it’s needed most.
