Nourishing Sydney and Surrounding Areas | Charlene’s Nutrition Centre

Charlene Anderson immigrated to Canada as a child and grew up in North Sydney where she continues to live today. Charlene began her post-secondary studies by completing a Bachelor of Arts from Dalhousie University followed by a Bachelor of Business Administration from Cape Breton University. Taking after her parents, who taught her a very strong work ethic, Charlene always knew she wanted to be an entrepreneur. This journey began when she opened Charlene’s Nutrition Centre which she has proudly owned and operated for the last 27 years. Charlene also returned back to school 10 years ago and became a Registered Holistic Nutritional Consultant at the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition.

Charlene’s Nutrition Centre is located in a Health Complex on Kings Road in Sydney alongside Sydney Chiropractic & Laser Centre. The health food store, which currently employs five people, prides itself on offering a diverse range of products. “We sell everything from vitamins,  supplements, sports nutrition, organic groceries, and spices to body care products, aromatherapy, and gifts,” Charlene says. “We also sell local products and bring in baked goods from suppliers across Nova Scotia.” There is also plenty of free parking available at the complex, making it easy and convenient for customers to visit the shop.

Some may be surprised to learn just how unique the product offerings at Charlene’s Nutrition Centre are. “We do lots of special orders for our customers and do our best to bring in what they need,” says Charlene. The health food store also supports other local businesses by bringing in their products, such as honey, coffee, and maple syrup, whenever they can. Charlene ensures they bring in products for holidays and special occasions as well. Right now you will find vegan, gluten-free, and organic chocolates in the shop for Valentine’s Day and Easter.

Every business faces challenges, and Charlene’s Nutrition Centre is no exception. Charlene recalls one of the biggest challenges they faced was when Kings Road was closed for necessary construction for two years. However, despite the street being closed, their loyal customers continued to support the store, oftentimes manoeuvring through construction to cross the street. Charlene says, “It was a difficult period but our customers helped us get through it, adding that the construction workers were great to let their customers cross through the construction zone as well.”

One of Charlene’s favourite things about being in business in the CBRM is the people. “We love interacting with our customers and other business owners,” she says. “People are willing to share and talk. They truly want you to succeed.” Charlene also admits this is one of her favourite benefits of being a Chamber Member. She thoroughly enjoys attending networking events hosted by the Chamber such as Business After Hours, and believes the Chamber provides many important benefits to small businesses.

Charlene loves doing business in the CBRM and plans to be in business for many more years. Her advice to other local business owners is, “Don’t give up. The community will always support you. Keep smiling every day. Enjoy what you’re doing, and it won’t feel like work. You will get through.”
